Grandma's Yeast Rolls (...but in the bread machine...sorry Grandma.....)

These rolls.... oohhhhh these rolls.

They are delicious. Fluffy. Buttery. Soft and perfect.

I love them. Wade loves them (with peanut butter and syrup..... which I think is gross but he LOVES). My kids love them.

You should make them. PLUS you can make the dough in the bread machine!! Come on people, how simple is that?? ;)

This recipe is adapted from one that Wade's grandma showed me when she lived in California for a brief time. She was an amazing woman.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp yeast (or one package)

So what you want to do is put the ingredients in the bread machine in the order that I've listed them above:

Then put your bread machine on the "dough" cycle .

Then, uuhhhh.....you know. Go eat bon bons.

Isn't that what housewives do all day?

Ha ha.

So when the machine is about done, you'll want to get a few things ready. Spray a 9x13 pan with Pam:

I am sorry, my hand is so hideous.

Ok, then flour a cutting board:

And melt 4 Tb butter in a little bowl:

Great! Now when the dough is done, you're going to plop it out onto your floured cutting board, and now you have two choices. If you want large rolls (like to make small sandwiches on, or if you prefer a large dinner roll to small ones) divide the dough into 12 pieces. If you want smaller dinner rolls, divide the dough into 20 pieces (I do 20)

Then roll each piece into a little ball, and put the balls seam side down into your pan, 4 across the small side, 5 down the long side. Brush each one with a little of the melted butter (you won't use all of it- you want to brush the rolls again when they come out of the oven)

Now you want to let the rise for about 45 minutes or so. They will get all cozy with each other and be touching....

The last 20 minutes or so of rising, preheat the oven to 375. Then bake the rolls for 15-18 minutes, or until the tops are golden.

Then, when they come out of the oven, brush the tops with the rest of the butter. Mmmmmm.... butter.....

Then, let them cool in the pan. Then, tell your family they didn't turn out, lock yourself in the bedroom, and eat them. All of them.

Wipe the butter off your hands before you come out, or they'll be suspicious.

These rolls are worth every calorie!

Now, on to another kind of roll. The belly roll (the kind I am constantly battling with, due to my love affair with food....)

I started week #2 of weight training. Today was good!! A little bit easier than last week! And I moved up a few pounds on all of the weights. So now, instead of just bench pressing the bar, I can bench press the bar and one of those tiny, 5 lb weights on each side, ha ha. I have to admit, it feels good to be doing weights again after such a long hiatus.

And I am happy to report that I didn't walk into the Men's locker room today! Aren't you proud of me??!

Have a great day!!

DINNER TONIGHT:
Homemade Pizza
Salad
Watermelon and Oranges

  1. Those look delish, Shari! If you don't have a bread machine, how long should you knead the dough for? Can't wait to make them!

  2. I would either do 5 minutes in a kitchen aid, or 8 minutes by hand! :) I miss you girl!

  5. Have you made these the day before serving and re-heated? Or would it be better to par bake? Or make the dough and leave in the fridge overnight? Any idea... thanks for the recipe they were really yummy. Tammy

  6. Glad you like them Diane!!

Tammy- I have made the dough ahead and put it in the fridge, but what I usually do is make them the day of and serve them room temp. They are fantastic at any temp!! :)

  7. When I looked in on mine in the bread machine, it was making more of crumbles than a dough ball.?? Ideas..? I used whole white flour. Thank you.

  9. I've been making these since I found your recipe last December, 2012. So delicious and easy! We also make little mini monkey bread rolls with this recipe in the muffn pan. Yum!

    2. I'm pretty sure you just roll the balls out into little balls, roll the balls in a cinnamon/sugar mixture and stack them on each other in a bunt cake pan. That's how we did it anyway...

  10. I made these today. It was my first attempt at making rolls. They were delicious! I will be making these again soon.

  13. I just want to say thank you for this recipe. It's absolutely delicious! We've made 2 batches of rolls and pizza crust (for an apple dessert pizza) so far, and I just formed a fourth batch into pretzels, which I basted with butter and sprinkled with sea salt and am about to pop in the oven. Such a yummy and universal dough ~ I love how soft it is. I'm thinking raisin cinnamon rolls and cheese rolls or garlic cheese twists for future batches. Thanks again for sharing!

  18. I made a practice batch of these rolls last night while I was making my Thanksgiving pies. My husband RAVED about these practice rolls! He took the left overs to work this morning commenting that he would only share with whom he deemed roll worthy.
I used the proofing on my oven to rise them. I had trouble forming into balls and were a little deformed. But, I looked up a how to roll rolls on youtube and I've got this, now. I'm looking forward to the next batch that I will make for Thanksgiving. I think I will run the dough through the bread machine, make the rolls and then put into the frig over night. I'll rise and bake in the morning. Thanks for the great recipe!

    1. As an addendum to my original post.
My extended family are crazy about these rolls. I will be making 3 batches of dough to bake in the morning for our Christmas Eve supper. I used Gold Metal unbleached all purpose flour.
Additionally, if you are on a budget, sign up to bring the rolls to the party. Very inexpensive to make, and they are beyond great!

  19. Can someone tell me, do you use regular flour or bread machine flour??
    Thank you

    1. Bread flour is much softer and it makes the rolls very soft and moist and instead I add 1/2 cup of sugar instead of 1/3 cup and it taste so similar to Golden corral when I do that I been making these rolls for two years now.

  20. I have a flour question too. All Purpose, Self Rising or Bread Flour? Not sure of all the differences. Also like to know if you have more recipes & where to find them...especially any bread/bread related recipes. I'd love a great pizza dough, preferably one done in the bread machine. I haven't tried making the yeast rolls yet but as great as they sound and look, I will as soon as I know which flour us best to use for them. Thanks.

    1. Not self rising. Bread flour or all purpose will work great. Self rising flour contains baking powder and salt.

  21. My sister, Denise Brown, made these and brought them to the family Christmas gathering this past Saturday. God love her , she brought 2 pans. We gently reheated them in the oven and then we demolished one entire pan, incredibly delicious! Being the wonderful, kind sister, she left some rolls for the hostess and then took ALL of the remaining home....none for me but after eating these I understand totally!! Fabulous rolls..this is a 5 STAR GO TO recipe...I endorse them....I will be making these using my Kitchen Aid Mixer as I dont have a bread machine...I promise you that these are GREAT

  26. I am 61 and have never made any bread EVER. I found your recipe yesterday, made the rolls last night in a bread machine that has been sitting on a shelf for 5 years (never used) and the rolls are yummy and beautiful! The recipe is great AND EASY but your humor is even more delightful. Thank you! I am so glad I found your blog!

  27. This is very similar to my Aunt Mary Ann's roll recipe - and now that I know how to do the second rising in my 100 degree electric oven -- I can use the dough cycle from my bread maker! Making for the second time on mother's day!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do not know how to use my electric oven for the rising of a second batch. Could someone help me out here. I love the recipe, but was wondering how to have enough for a big group all at once. I would appreciate your comments, hopefully soon. I would like to try the rolls for a gathering this Monday (Memorial Day).

  30. Hi! I was curious as to whether anyone had made these with whole wheat flour? I had to buy a ton of wheat to grow fodder for the critters, and since it is graded for human consumption I thought "Hey, lets grind some of this to use in the kitchen too!" So I have several (30) pounds of ground whole wheat in my freezer. I have made these rolls before (OMG good!!) and wondered if they would be as good with fresh wheat. Wondering what ration I would use if I did part bread flour and part whole wheat?

  38. The first time I made these, my husband nearly devoured the whole pan; the second time I made them I took them to a potluck and they were gone in 15 minutes from the time they went on the table. I keep making them and freezing them to keep enough around so I don't have to make them 2-3 times a week. They are so easy, so simple perfect, so absolutely delicious, no mater what you spread on them. Way to go, thanks for sharing. Bobi

  44. This is definitely the only roll recipe I will use for my favorite. So glad you were kind enough to share your recipe. You have definitely made my family rave as they take another roll. Tried to get to the bedroom with the pan, but was caught on my way. So you guessed it, they were all devoured quickly by the family waiting on them to come out of the oven. The family seems to have good sniffers.

  47. I have used my bread maker to make many different types of rolls but these were by far THE BEST I have ever had! I felt like eating them all by myself but instead I shared them with my family. : ) They loved them too and want me to make more tomorrow!

  48. I attempted these today and cut the recipe in 1/2 since there's only two of us and ten each seems a bit excessive. I can deal with 5 each :P
I had to tweak it a little bit, so hopefully they'll turn out - should know in a couple of hours. I'll repost how it worked.
1/4 c. Half and half (didn't have milk)
    1/4 c. water
    2 c. minus 2 T unbleached flour
    2T melted unsalted butter
    1.5T sugar
    1/2 beaten egg
    1/2t kosher salt
    1 + 1/8 t yeast

Dough was a little dry/crumby when mixing, so I added a bit of chicken broth I had sitting on the counter. Maybe 2 t. Wish me luck!

    1. I'm sure You can. Made a different recipe a few weeks ago using bread flour instead of all purpose and they came out fine. And to be honest, I probably used bread flour when I made these at Christmas last year since that's what I use for all my bread machine recipes (and probably was in too much of a rush to notice the difference while putting it together)
